Optiarc DVD RW AD-7173A not working properly

have had installed on my Windows XP computer an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7173A to replace a drive that had stopped working. The new drive behaves as if it is a CD ROM reader only and will not play DVD's, will not delete files from the disk ,or format a disk. It thinks it is a CD ROM reader drive.

The BIOS states Secondry Drive 0 CD ROM READER
The Device Manager states DVD/CD ROM Drives
optiarc DVD RW AD-7173 A this device is working properly.

I was not given an installation disk by the installer!

Please reply with advice,

...Usually, if a DVD drive only plays CDs it means that a) there is a driver issue or b) ther is a problem with the DVD laser. These composite drives can usually do both jobs by using a laser lens for CD and a different one for DVD. The DVD one may be faulty.

You usually don't delete files from CD or DVD disks. Certainly don't try to format CD R or DVD R disks! They're ready to go!

Despite what Device manager says, I think it may be a faulty drive and would return it on warranty.

You usually don't need an installation disk. Windows provides drivers.

...my age must be catching up with me! It may be simply that this drive does not like the brand of media you are using. Try different ones
