I'm no expert in hardware, but both require double the amount of installed RAM to run their respective operating systems effectively - Vista minimum of 1GB, XP minimum of 512MB. I have an XP Home laptop with 256MB of Ram and it's far too slow.

I agree, I too have a 256mb XP Home laptop
and will upgrade.
I'm trying to find a cheap unit for a friend ('Speech recognition software' thread). If it was me I think I'd go for the XP (as Vista has had mixed reviews) and upgrade to 512mb for £15.
But would like to know others' thoughts.

As long as it's for basic office type applications and there is no desire to upgrade it in the future, I'd go for the local option with XP and at least double the RAM.

I notice that your local store option has an AGP graphics slot. This will seriously limit your choice for any future graphics upgrade. If you are only using the pc for web surfing and office applications then this will be no problem, but then almost any pc less than 5 years old should handle these jobs adequately. Current graphics cards are mostly PCI express (PCIe) click here.

Yes, will only be used for basic apps.
Evening shift?
