Opening SOME pdf pages

I was after some info that a friend sent me via pdf files.
A couple of them open normally,,,, in that I can read them before deciding whether to save or not.
A couple of them get an Adobe Updater pop-up saying:
"NO INTERNET CONNECTION WAS FOUND. PLEASE CHECK INTERNET SETTINGS OR FIREWALL"

Of course I was connected - via BT B.Band.
I turned off Firewall for a second,,, but to no avail.
I went to Adobe Reader to update, but it says that I have the latest version (8:1:2).
I tried Repair - again to no avail.
Today I am getting the same pop-up as above when looking for up-date.

This only occurs with a certain page so far, that was sent by a trusted friend from a Watch forum.

Is there a later version than 8.1.2 ?
How can I get it if I can't 'up-date' ?

Any ideas please ?
