Open source code site builder - security issues

A friend of mine has a site built using Mambo, which is an open source content management system. The site has been suspended by the host because it has been hacked and is sending spam emails.

I haven't heard of this before - is a site built in this way more susceptible to security issues than a conventional/commercial program (i.e. Dreamweaver)? My friend has to remove all of her files, and give an assurance regarding future content, before the host will restore the site.

Any views on site security and free site builders?

and open-source software may be especially vulnerable, it depends on the application.

There are many CMS systems avalable to download, but some are definitely better than others. I wouldn't use an open-source product myself, I prefer to use something like this:
