Hello
I am considering installing Open Office on my desktop which has Windows 7 and on my lap top which has Windows XP hoping that I will be able to see my files on both using memory stick

I notice that Open Office is free

So is it any good? and will it do as I am suggesting with out problems with file extensions

Grateful for any comments

Yes, Open Office will do what you require. Files can be saved in either its own native format or in Microsoft Office file formats, e.g. .XLS, .doc etc.
