My new CD Writer has been recognised by my Windows 98 as drives D, E, F, G, H, I, J, and K.How do I get rid of the 7 unused and unwanted recognitions?

If I recall correctly you have the option in DEVICE MANAGER to fix the drive letter. Probably accessible from "properties" windows. Just fix the start and finish letter to the same letter. i.e. Fix both at F if you want the drive to be designated as F. Here using Windows XP and the Device Manager setup is now different.
