I have connected my old hard internal 3.5 ide drive to my computer via a USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Adaptor Kit for 2.5/3.5/5.25 Inch SATA or IDE Drives. It is a plug & play adapter kit, everything seems to have loaded ok i.e drivers but i cant find my hard drive in computer. I am running Vista home premium, can anyone advise please.

Right Click on my computer then choose manage then Disk Manager - Is it showing there?

In the disk drive section there is a drive named WDC WD3200JS-22PDDB0, would this be it.

That is a 320GB SATA-300 Hard Drive

Was that your old drive?

No my old one is 40GB so its not showing in Device Manager.

If you are not sure which one it is... Make a note of ALL the disks drives shown in Disk Manager and then switch off the computer and disconnect the old internal drive, then boot up and have another look in Disk Manager to see which one is now missing.

note: WDC is Western Digital harddrive make.

If not did the kit come with a second USB cable that plugs into the Drive enclosure. You may need to add both to get the power to run the hard drive.

It came with its own power adapter which connects directly to the old drive and it is getting power because you can hear the drive and also the usb connector has blue lights to indicate that it is connected to the computer correctly so im stumped, unless the old drive is knackered.

Take it out of the external caddy and check the jumpers on the drive are set to MASTER.

Refit the drive and reconnect the caddy to the PC, it should now be seen in My computer.
