Old Desk Top PC

Good Morning,
I have an old Desk Top PC which I need to dispose of, can anyone give me any advice on how to do this safely and wipe the hard drive of any confidential information that may be stored there, and is there a particular place that I take it too.

Take the hard drive out and use it as a spare HDD

Take the hard drive out, take the rest to your local council recycling centre (dump). Then either keep the hard drive and put it into the new computer or attack it with a hammer (using all the safety precautions - gloves, goggles etc) and dispose of the remnants into the dustbin.
