Office XP over Offfice 2003

My friend has come to me as he thinks I know a bit about computers....but I don't want to ruin his PC by exaggerating my knowledge.

He is running Office 2003 on Windows XP home. However, Excel will not start now as everytime he starts it up, a dialogue box tells him to insert the CD to install. He doesn't have the original 2003 disks.

He has bought a copy of Office XP. But I don't know how to approach this.

As Office XP came before Office 2003, I presume it would be barmy to attempt to install Office XP before totally uninstalling 2003.Is this right?

Do I also need to ensure he has backed up all his important Office documents?

Thanks in advance.

Uninstalling Office 2003 won't get rid of the documents or e-mails and contacts etc... But some documents it created may not open in XP. Microsoft has always provided converters so it shouldn't be an issue once XP is installed

Is the version of Office XP a full copy, or an upgrade? If it's the upgrade then you cannot install it without the previous version installed first. You are right that you will need to uninstall 2003 and backup all data before installing.

If it is a full copy, then you should be Ok.
