Occasional random freezes

No other symptoms - the system just hangs, and has to be hard restarted.

I'm hoping that it's a software issue, and that reloading XP will cure it. Before I spend half a day on that, though - what are the chances? Or is it more likely to be an intermittent hardware error?

FReeezing PC

  1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans

  2. PSU voltages

  3. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

  4. faulty memory stick try memtest http://www.memtest86.com/

  5. virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

  6. driver conflicts especially grahics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment

Thanks Fruit Bat /\0/. See below:

  1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans

I'll check that out

  1. PSU voltages

If that's the case, then the PSU must have developed a fault. The PC has been stable for a couple of years.

  1. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

It's hard to see, if that's the case, why it's suddenly started happening

  1. faulty memory stick try memtest http://www.memtest86.com/

Good thought - I'll try that. But will it flag up intermittent errors?

  1. virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

No - it can remain OK for many hours at a time, then freeze twice in an hour. I don't think this is it.

  1. driver conflicts especially grahics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment

No new hardware installed - except a 2TB HP USB drive - so it's hard to know why conflicts might have developed.

Try running Core Temp should see if the CPUs temps are OK. If a desktop when was the last time it was opened and the dust carefully cleaned out?

Not got Bit Defender running have you.

I downloaded it about a month ago and had to remove it because of the odd freeze up.

You haven't downloaded something or had an update recently?.

  Ian in Northampton 16:47 14 May 2012

rdave13: thanks - am running that as we speak. buteman: nope, no Bit Defender spuds: nope, no downloads, no updates (I'm on manual updates, so would know if I had allowed anything)
