The 'signs' are called emoticons.

Your link to the Japanese Emoticons site is interesting. However, the site says "Apparently, Japanese Smileys (Emoticons)are read vertically while eastern Smileys (Emoticons)......."

Now, unless the world has changed recently, Japanese IS in the east!

  Peverelli 01:04 19 Nov 2004

... yes but then again, the USA is east of Japan! ;-)

  Jackcoms 08:07 19 Nov 2004

Peverelli

No it ain't. The International Date Line runs (roughly) down the middle of the Pacific and that is one 'markers' used to define East and West :-)
