Numeric key pad not working on computer

One of my flock likes to use the numeric keypad[I have never used it my self]
It has now decided not to work.
He consulted me and my initial advice was to strip the keyboard and wash in warm detergent water the membrane amdthoroughly dry.
This did work for other malfunctioning keys in the Alpha side but not the numerical side.
So He purchased a new board- same result mainside works but not numercial He went upmarket and purchased a 'Cherry'
Same thing no numeric pad funtion.
The computer is USB only- so he does not have the option to switch to PS2.
Any ideas anyone?

Silly question maybe, but is the keypad turned on, using 'Num Lock'?

  jack 11:49 23 Oct 2009

But after three boards I guess He should have tried all those on/off options

Sounds like a num lock problem.

But where.
Remember 3 keyboards All USB
NoPS2 possible
So what NumLock problem?
Can only be in computer somehow somewhere if the numlock keey activication/deactivication does nothing.

This shouldn't make a difference but see what happens when num lock is used on the on-screen keyboard.

Try deleting all USB drivers so that windows can restore them again on starting (if you haven't already).

Go into BIOS and if its turned on Turn it off and Save settings then go back in and reEnable it and Save settings before Exit

member after having thought out your kind responses and made my own checks I tentatively asked
You did make the Num lock key did you not?
He replied
'Thanks for your message, I am ashamed to say that the fault did involve the use of the NUMLOCK.
When I have turned on my computer in the past I have never had to touch this key.
Old age?
Albert.'

Albert.
Well he is 85- so we will forgive him.
But 'Never had to do it before' seems odd
never mind allswell that ends well
