ntldr missing

  s99Raj 13:37 10 Dec 2006

I'm getting an "NTLDR is missing" message on a pc with XP Home on it. The message accourred after trying to install SP2. I've booted to the Recovery Console and tried the following :

chkdsk c:
bootcfg /rebuild

and they seemed to go OK. But when I tried either of these two :

copy d:/i386/ntldr c:
copy d:/i386/ntdetect.com c:

I got the message "Access is denied".

Anyone know where I can go from here?

NTLDR Missing
If you have FAT32 partitions, it is much simpler than with NTFS. Just boot with a Win98 floppy and copy the NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM files from the i386 directory to the root of the C:\ drive.

Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1 Enter in the administrator password when requested Enter in the following commands (X: is replaced by the actual drive letter that is assigned to the CD ROM drive) COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\: COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\ Take out the CD ROM and type exit

That link above applies to Windows 2000.

Will it work for XP?

Thank you Fruit Bat, but I tried what you said. I just get "Access is denied" after the copy commands.

Repair XP by install over the top of existing systm

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

OK, thanks for that Fruit Bat. I'm trying it now as it seems to be the only option left. I hope it doesn't delete the programs and varios files that are on thee, but no matter if it does since I have backups of the important ones.
