Nothing happens in Device Manager

  newface 16:27 13 Apr 2009

I am using Windows XP SP3.
While trying to add a PCI multi I/O card from MosChip, I noticed that when I go start/System Properties/ Device Manager the little window opens, but there is nothing there.
How can I retrieve the info as I am sure that I need to update the drivers but I cannot find a way to do it.

Try My Computer>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager

Start>Run type: scf /scannow
You may be asked for your WinXP disk. When your disk launches and you're presented with a selection od choices select 'Exit' but leave the disk in. The command will scan your disk and replace any OS files and drivers that might be missing.

Wow what a great response!

I was talking to a friend on the phone just after I had posted this and he emailed me this solution :-
1. create a copy of the registry.
2. run regedt32
3. click on the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE & maximise it.
4. click on the + next to SYSTEM
5. click on the + next to CurrentControlSet
6. Right click on Enum and select Permissions.
7. Click Add
8. Add Group "Everyone" and User "SYSTEM"
9. select Everyone and check Read(nothing else!!!)
10. select SYSTEM and check FUll Control.
11. Click the Adavance button and check the "reset permissions to child objects ...etc"
12. Click OK
13. If there is a warning window click "yes"
14. close regedt32

It worked great for me.

Thanks again for the responses.
