Notepad doesn't open files

  mmack 21:52 04 Jul 2005

To open a .txt file I have to manually open notepad then drag the file into the double clicking a .txt file i get the options window with various programs to use, which doesn't include notepad - when i select browse i can find notepad in the windows directory but when i click on it the window closes and i am left back at the options window.
Running XP - any ideas?

Right click the text file, choose properties. In the window you will see "Type of file" and "opens with" near the top. See if notepad is the default viewer. If not click the change button and choose notepad.

Right click a .txt file, select Open With. Browse to select Notepad and tick Always use this program to open this type of file.

Thats what I've been doing, only when I click the change button and browse for notepad.exe - when I select it the browse window just closes and I am left back at the choose program window with notepad still not on the program list...

Erm, no it is I that should apologise as you were first.

In fact no apology is really necessary - multiple answers are fairly common. There is no problem (as long as they basically agree).

Don't click change. Just do as above.
