Not enough disk space error, but I have loads

  vandango 12:01 20 Apr 2008

Hello all, hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction here .. ..

I'm trying to copy a 6gb file to an external drive that has 20gb of free space from my c drive that has around 30gb of available space but xp keeps giving me an error message saying there is not enough space available and to run disk clean up.

I've tried rebooting but still the same message

Any ideas?

Is the drive formatted as FAT32? If it is there is a 4GB size limit.

You can convert it to NTFS click here

that'll be it, it is formatted in fat32, I would reformat but I have too much data to try and put elsewhere temporarily

You don't have to format it, you can convert it - see my link.

Thanks for your help VOG I read the link and would be worried about losing all the data. I'm sure they just recommend backing up to cover thereselves but wouldn't take the chance. Transferring over network to other machine instead 170mins remain!
