When I start up my PC, the Auto Protect on the Anti-Virus doesn't kick in until a few minutes later. OS is Windows XP/SP2. Any idea why that should be the case? Am I at risk?

It's just a delay in the program icon appearing in the taskbar. I think that you will find that this delay is while the AV program is running its startup checks. It is protecting you during this time - you should not be at risk.

Beynac - are you named after the French town on the Dordogne?

Been there!!.....Isn't it perched at the top of a cliff by the river?

Yes - a lovely little town with a beautiful chateau perched on the cliff. We visited France just before I got my first PC. We stayed at Beynac and when I needed a user name for the internet "Beynac" sprang to mind and I've used it ever since.
