Norton/AVAST Problem

I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 with Norton SystemWorks and Norton Internet Security. I have not used or downloaded any other Antivirus software. Over the past 3 weeks I have been getting the following message when trying to send emails: A box comes up headed Symantec Email Proxy.
The message in the box is: Your email message was unable to be sent because your mail server rejected the message: 554 Failure AVAST virus scan failed - file not found.

I knw that there is an AVAST Virus programme, but I have never used it. I have tried disabling Norton Antivirus Email scanning but this does not resolve the problem.

Grateful for any suggestions.
