Norton A/V updates

  Hardworking 17:55 11 Sep 2005

Hello everyone. I'm new to this group. I run Norton Security 2004 and twice recently I've had a/v definitions 7.8 Mb in size. 200Kb is usually the ceiling for these. It has also happened to someone I know. Has anyone else had this happen, and does anyone know the reason?

Small updates are virus signature files, these are usually incremental additions to the programs virus database, they allow the AV to identify and deal with the new virus. There are on occasions new viruses that the AV software can't deal with, as a result the AV house, be they Symantek, Mcafee etc. will revise the program as necessary to deal with the new threat. This will then be released as a program update, this is the larger download.

Thanks for that, Belatucadrus. I do know that there have been a couple of real nasties recently.
It's a comfort to know that Symantec is looking after us!
Cheers, Hardworking
