No Wireless Activation

I am trying to set up a wireless network for my elderley parents. I have bought them a Sony Vaio N38 Lap top and a Netgear DG834PN Router.
They have AOL Broadband. The new lap-top is running Visa Home Premium O.S.
I have managed to connect to the internet with the network cable connected between the Router and the laptop but I cannot get the system to work wirelessly. I know that the Router is working as I have connected to the new network with my own lap top. Short of me believing that there may be a problem with the Wireless kit inside the laptop does anybody know why this doesn't work?

Can the lappy see the connection in the wireless settings?

May sound stupid but check whether there is a wireless switch on the laptop. That one catches me out every time on my mates laptop, the default on his if off. Also check that wireless is enabled in Windows.

When wireless is switched on as per mikeben121

check you have entered the correct security key.
