No sound in Windows Media Player 9

  Max Star 18:25 11 Jun 2004

I can't get any sound from mp3's or CD's played through Windows Media Player 9. However, the sound is working OK and I can play these files through the Real One Player. I am using Windows XP.

The only solution I could think of was to remove the Windows Media Player program and then re-install it but I would lose all my playlists by doing this wouldn't I?

Can somebody offer any help?

Check this:

Open WMP Click Tools -> Options. Click the devices tab.

You should see speakers as devices (as well as your cd etc) highlight Speakers, Click properties.
Check it is using the right sound card/onboard sound.

If so, then click the Advanced Tab (from teh speaker properties box) and make sure that the mute box is unchecked, and that the volume is set high enough to hear.
