Firstly can you get into your audio properties and check that the cd-rom/cd audio hasn't been muted.

there should be a ribbon to mobo a power cable to power supply unit and a small cable from cd to sound cardwithout this you get nowt

The sound of the moden dialling doesn't come from the speakers on my computer and never has done on any of the other computers I've ever had.

You don't, by any chance, have anything plugged into the headphone socket do you as this may automatically mute the spreaker output??

Simple but it can happen. If you have, try unplugging the headphones.

Does your speaker setup have its own power supply? i.e. is it a sub woofer unit plugged into a power socket with sattelite speakers??

If so, check the fuse in the wall plug. Does the light come on when press the power switch on the speakers?
