No sound in laptop

I've just been charged with fixing my sisters laptop. Her boyfriend borrowed it and now its come back with no sound.

When you go to Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices, it says there is No Audio Device, and all the options are greyed out.

I went to the Realtek site to get drivers, downloaded them and it said they installed but it doesn't look that way, they are all just sat in a folder in Program Files.

Also, I have tried it with headphones and that didn't work.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

Look in the folder you mentioned to see if there is a "Setup" icon, if so double click it and the drivers should install.

What does it say about audio devices in device mamager, are there any yellow exclamation marks, if so try installing the driver from there, directing the search to the folder you mentioned above.

There was no setup icon in the Program files.

I've tried them device manager and found it was disabled, so I enabled it and then it said the drivers were bad. I pointed it at the Realtek folder and it didn't find anything. Should I download the drivers again?

I've downloaded and reinstalled the drivers, still the sound doesn't work.

All fixed, I downloaded the AC97 drivers and it works like a charm.

Thanks for your help PO79
