no sound from DVD

I've just replaced my CD-RW with a DVD-RW machine. It writes and reads data fine. It plays audio CDs with no probem. However, when I try to play standard DVDs, I get the picture but no sound. Unfortunately, the machine (a Sony DWG120A) was supplied without any software or documentation and the suppliers (Novatech) have been less than helpful.

Can anyone help?

What software have you installed for playing DVDs?

click here Codec Installation Packages - these may help

Is this the first time you have tried to play a DVD, if so what programme are you using to play them, you may have a missing audio codec or similar problem. You could try downloading this

I now have both picture and sound, but only when I use VLC Media Player and only in a very jerky fashion.

Real Player gives the error message: "The DVD cannot be played. Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed.".

Windows Media Player 9 does not recognise the presence of the disk, at all.

I've lost track of the codecs etc. I've downloaded and installed.

I would upgrade to WMP 10, then download this click here

Once the codec pack is installed, use the 'Just Play' option.

You could also try Cyberlink PowerDVD. I use this and it works fine and also installs codecs for WMP.
