i have reinstalled xp and since doing so ,i have lost my sound,i do not have a seperate sound card ,
i use speakers>plugged into the green port at the back of machine,
if i have to download drivers how can i find what drivers i will need, could they be drivers for MPU-401 compatable midi device.

If you havn't installed the drivers from your motherboard cd yet, then this may be the problem.
Or look in the bios to make sure your onboard sound is enabled.

MPU stands for MIDI Processing Unit and is not a soundcard.
Your onboard sound may be something like ac 97 codec(If i recall correctly, long time since i used xp) which you should be able to locate in the bios.

Try Control panel.Administrative tools.Services.Scroll down to Widows Audio and make sure it is set to automatic.

Make sure your speakers are plugged in and switched on.Check your keyboard does not have sound disabled.Or try control panel.Sounds and audio devices.Make sure the Mute box is not ticked.

buteman yes it is set on autmatic

  mrwoowoo 19:19 25 May 2008

If butemans advice doesn't work.
In the Bios
Click on Advanced,then chipset configuration.
Then scroll right down as it is hidden at first.
Should say... Onboard AC 97 audio.

the mute box is not ticked, but the volune slider is set at low,and cannot highlight anything, there is a message at the top of the properties box no audio device.

Then you need to do as i advise above.
Have you installed your motherboard cd as previously suggested?
