OK looks like failure of the hard drive with the operating system on. or failure of the 12v supply line in the PSU to power that drive.

Make and model of PC, operating system?

Can you remove the side cover and unplug the data and power leads to the hard drive and then reconnect them _ check the data lead is also secure wher it connects to the motherboard?

I'm afraid it's a laptop so we can't do the things you suggested but thanks for your help.

You will find a cover on the bottom with a small symbol that looks like a cylinder on it that will be the hard drive under it undo the screws take off the cover and remove the drive then reseat replace cover and switch back on.
