Have you tried unplugging the hard-drive then plugging it back in to make sure the connections are fine?

yes tried that.........

Is the HDD picked up in the BIOS?

  suzy100 11:27 26 Apr 2007

just going into bios now.........
says Primary Master (none)
Secondary Master (DVD/CD-ROM)

If the drive isnt being picked up by the BIOS and it is connected correctly then I suspect the drive has died.
Can you try the drive in another machine to check if it is detected?

i have a compaq laptop aswell, not sure if they are compatible.......

It sounds like the HD is kaput. Assuming that you have checked to ensure that there are no loose connections you could take the drive out and try it in another laptop to see if it is faulty. 99% certain the drive is knackered.

will it work in the compaq laptop?

  alan2273 13:30 26 Apr 2007

As it is a 2.5" hard drive, yes it will, but if it is dead and it certainly sounds like it is, then no it will not work in anything.

Almost certainly not boot correctly, but the point is that recognition of any sort will show the drive is not knackerd.
