No icons

I have a screen with no icons, just a plain blue screen. I can only get on the internet by task manager, then typing in outlook. From there I go to favourites and the internet.

Safe mode produces a plain black screen.

If I type explorer.exe into task manager it comes up with not found.

The tech guys reccomend formatting, but I rather not.

Windows xp, desktop.

"If I type explorer.exe into task manager it comes up with not found"

That's why you've got no icons/desktop then, probably. Explorer is what runs that.

A registry key that handles how the Windows shell (explorer.exe) loads is likely corrupt. Use Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) to run regedit manually. Then find the following key and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe

Then reboot. This is a serious error - may be caused by a virus, so check your system out very carefully.

Just a long shot, can you try system restore through task manager: file, new task(run), type control panel. In control panel click performance and maintenance and system restore on left panel.

Or maybe press the windows key and r at the same time should open run.Or just pressing the Windows logo on the keyboard will let you into all programs.Accessories.system tools.System restore.Maybe try it in safe mode.

Tried your first link and got regedit back.

Now I have my desktop but no internet connection.

I am running avg now.

Any idea on how to get connection? I cannot download any programmes until I have connection.

Try right clicking local area connection on the Taskbar and press repair.
