No display after formatting

I have been given an old PC which was working OK but after formating the hard drive when I try to re-install XP the screen goes blank. I can access the BIOS and all seems OK there. There are no error messages when I continue the boot and I can see/hear DVDROM activity.

The PC has a PCI graphics card but no other socket for plugging the monitor direct to the mother board. Is this the problem? IE, the graphics card needs the driver installed.

If it is can I get round it?

Installing the graphics driver will come once xp is installed as xp will use a generic driver first.

Check the graphics card is inserted firmly and remove any usb devices that maybe connected and not needed.

Check your bios is set to boot from cd/dvd as first boot device.

Boot order should look like;

cd/dvd
hdd
floppy
usb
