No Disk in F

  pj123 14:00 28 Dec 2004

Have a friend who has an LG 4081B DVD Rewriter.

It recognises and plays CDs but every time a DVD is inserted an error message comes up: "No disk in F"

I also have an LG 4081B on my PC but I don't get that problem. My drive recognises CDs and DVDs.

His system is Duron 1300, 256mb ram Windows 98SE. My system is Athlon 2000, 256mb ram and Windows 98SE.

Any ideas, please?

can he burn to a DVD with it?

The dvd laser may have become dislodged or dirty.

madboy33©®, no, he can't burn to DVD but can burn to CD.

ACOLYTE, we have tried a cleaner disk but that has made no difference.

Our next move is to take his DVD burner out and replace it with mine, which is the same as his.

check your drive first in his computer then report back

My old 700mhz computer used to play DVD's so it cant be his machine unless he has to many applications running. The usual culprit is anti-virus programmes.

Has he turned all the programmes off?

Also go to start>run and type msconfig, look under the startup tab and see if there are any programmes loading at start up that he does not want. Remember to restart computer after unticking any startup programmes. Also look in the startup folder (start>programmes>startup), they can be safely deleted as they are only shortcuts

Hope this helps

madboy33©®, will do that, but it won't be until the 11th January now.

We did try disabling his firewall and antivirus but that made no difference. Have also done the msconfig bit.

have you checked his startup folder?

It is definitely Drive F. It was working OK about a couple of weeks ago. He has been copying his VHS tapes to DVD.

Explorer shows "F:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready" when there is a DVD in the drive. But it shows a listing when there is a CD in.

It also runs and installs apps from a CD with no problem. We also downloaded new versions of AVG, Spybot, Adware and Spywareblaster and burned them to CD and then used them (from the CD) to update his existing files. I will close this thread now until the 11th Jan when my burner is installed and see what happens. Will report back at that time.

This thread is now locked and can not be replied to.
