no audio device - help!

  White_Elephant 12:31 04 Oct 2008

Just last week, I noticed that my soundcard had stopped working. When I go to Ctrl panel - sounds & audio devices - everything is greyed out and it says no audio devices, yet the card is listed as working properly in device manager with no conflicts.

I have tried:
uninstalling then installing latest sound card drivers - no luck.
ran add hardware wizard again - no joy there.
checked that bios not set to onboard sound
system restore to before it happened

Have seen others with same problem on web but couldn't find a solution.

creative soundblaster xfi extreme audio (pci card)
win xp pro - sp2
athlon 3700
2 gig ram
mobo - gigabyte (cant remember model)

Try Control Panel.Administrative tools.Services.Scroll down to windows audio and make sure it is set to automatic.

Is the card actually detected when you start the machine with no drivers installed?

I have onboard sound, so I don't know if this will work for you, but it would be interesting to find out!
Go here and use the information in my last post. click here

Boot in safe mode, go into device manager and select SHow Hidden Devices, remove any references to your sound card and the UAA Bus if installed (System Devices)
