NEW VALUE PC ADVICE

Can anyone recommend my best for buying a desktop under 350 pounds. The biggest complaint I've heard in much research is that Vista's very slow unless you're upgrading ram and graphics cards, which for me completely defeats the object of a new pc so would I not be best sticking with windows xp? I've heard good and bad things about every single make, acer, dell, mesh, fujitsu siemens so I'm at a loss as to what to go for. 1gb of ram is a minimum requirement for me, dual core processor would be nice if possible at that price. Pc will be used mainly for poker playing video and music, no huge memory draining game play or anything.
