New PC - your recommendations on configuration

Hi - I have a new Dell machine running Vista and literally plugged it all in on Friday. It has no files added to it yet I have a clean slate. I have a 250 gig hardrive. I wanted to know what people would recommend re configuring it? Can I partition an area and use this to back up files? I have info on anti virus and firewall recommendations but this is more a post about file management and hosekeeping that would allow me to protect the files but be able to keep the machine quick and safe? any views?

I wouldn't even consider partioning. With the cost so low nowadays stick a second hard drive in it. It will only take two minutes and will be far more secure.
If a single partioned drive goes down, you lose your backups as well.

I agree, hdd's are so cheap now, buy a second drive, the bigger the better.
