New PC for Photography

I am looking for a PC for imagery (mainly stills through Photoshop CS3). Apart from the Phot work, I will be using it for research and general non heavy loading tasking. I will be aiming for highest possible Ram and probably a Core 2 Quad Chip. Can anyone advise and point me in the right direction.

Agree with Marg7, a good quality high res monitor should be prime consideration and then plenty of ram. Processor speed not so vital.

Hopefully, one of our forum members, "hssutton", will see this thread.

He is a real photo expert, and I know he uses Photoshop regularly. I am sure he could advise you.

What you do with the images is more important like printing them off, so a good printer is essential

We use CS3 at our computer club, it's a hungry beast.RAM is vital, anything less than lgb of RAM CS3 is slow to respond. 2gb is better,it's in it's element having something like 50% of this total to work with.

Thanks for all the advice. I already have printers monitors sorted, I am just concerned about getting a system that will see me through a few years!! CS3 certainly does use up the RAM, I use it along with Nikon Capture at work. This is why I was going to go for 64bitOS and as much RAM as I can afford, Marg7 concerns me a little when you say its not the best option?? Surely if I opt for a 64bit OS through someone like PC Specialist or Novatech they would advise if something was incompatible?

'A 64bit operating system, which can recognise and access more RAM may be less compatible with some software, drivers etc. and would need to be supported by your processor etc and I don't think this is the better option for what you need'
