New Modem and Ports probs

I am running Win98 se on both my computers.
As I was having probs with internet connections I purchased a new Modem for my later computer ,the old modem was V90 the new V92.
Unfortunatly the new modem can be connected to every port except Com1. Looking on Device Manager I've only got Com1.Looking on my old computer it's got Com 1 to3. Can the extra ports be added.
Putting the old Modem back it only wants to hook up to Com2 and although it dials there is no internet connection.
HELP please.

To add a Com port, go to Control Panel, Add new hardware, Ports, Com port.

Is this an internal, or an external modem?

An external modem connects to a physiacl, existing com port.

An internal mdem has it's own on-board com port, whch is configured during the software installation process (most of them seem to choose com3).
