I am not a gamer apart from occasional Flight sim.

It would be helpful if you stated what sort of motherboard, (AMD or Intel), also what processor do you have to put in it, (as that can restrict the choice of motherboards).
As there are that many motherboards with onboard graphics, without the above information it would be impossible to make a suggestion.

I am looking at Asus M3A78-CM with AMD AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+,
AMD chipset

Although I coul still opt for Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 / 2x2.20GHz with suitable mobo.

“Will a micro ATX fit in a ATX tower”

Yes, you might have to move the motherboard spacers to fit the new board

“Do the IDE to SATA converters work and will I need one for each drive connected each to sata sockets or can I piggy back from one SATA???”

Yes the SATA to IDE converters works

SATA to IDE Dongle

You need one for each IDE device that you want to connect via a SATA ports

No you cannot piggyback SATA devices from the same SATA port

SATA Port 0 would connect to first hard drive

SATA Port 1 would connect to second hard drive if you have more than one hard drive

or the CD/DVD drive/ burner

SATA Port 2 would connect to CD/DVD burner

SATA Port 3 would connect to CD/DVD drive

The single IDE port will still allow you connect a master/slave CD/DVD IDE devices

or an IDE hard drive
