New laptop HD

I have an Acer Aspire laptop, and am thinking of replacing with a bigger HD.
I have a hidden partition, which i assume contains the operating system as i have to use my restore disk when reformatting.
If i replace my HD i assume that the restore disks are no good.
I have a legit XP disk not used on any other computer, can i use this, and would the necessary drivers be on this XP disk,or is there another alternative?I would prefer Vista, but of course,i have no disk.

Can anyone confirm what i fear please?

Connecr new drive via a USB caddy,
Use Acronis true imagr to clone the old drive to the new.

Fit you new drive in the laptop and use the old one for storage in the caddy.
