New laptop

I have saved a laptop in basket on Dell website with promotional code that runs out today so have posted this query in here instead of consumerwatch to get a fairly swift recommendation.
Dell Inspiron 1720 with 3 gb ram, 1.83processor, nvidia 256mb 8600m GT video card, 250 gig hdd. £523.00
Samsung r700 same processor, 2gb ram, 8400m gs graphics. £559.00
Also been looking at an Acer laptop at around similar price.
Which one would people recommend. Heard that Dell and Acer put a load of rubbish on their laptops and there could be other naughties in the future for any upgrades?

This may be of interest

Interesting article on BBC 1 (sorry no link) the other day where it was pointed out by Dom Littlewood in his show that Dell have been partly (at least) bought out by BT and can no longer be contacted other through the internet - fine if your PC is working!!!!

The samsung does get good reviews but i reckon i'd go for the dell.Last year that dell was classed as a high-end laptop and the price now would be what would sway my decision.

Bang for bucks came to mind instantly but I.T. dept. in work trying to sway me to the Samsung. Thought I would ask for opinions here first.

For spec....The Dell

For service: The Samsung.

It comes down to what you are going to use it for. If just everyday WP, email etc. then the slightly lower end graphics on the Samsung will not bother you at all.

If you are planning on playing games (not a good idea on a laptop anyway unless you spend ££££)

Then the Dell has the slight edge in the graphics dept.

Thanks for advice.
After doing initial configuration on the Dell website and finding a discount voucher, I managed to get another one from Dell with 320gb HDD, 8600gt 256mb graphics and 3gig of ram and all for only £3 more.
An even bigger bargain at total of £526 incl Vat and delivery.

does seem excellent value - perhaps after using it for a couple of weeks you could let us know what you think of it :)

There are plenty of telephone numbers to contact Dell click here
they are all listed on Dell Support Site as well as other means, online chat, email, ordinary post mail, etc
you also get the telephone numbers and contact details to call in with your documentation with pc

I have the Samsung and it is a superb "laptop"..More a desktop replacement, but very fast, looks good, good keyboard, good screen display...Although a lower graphics card, it played Half Life 2 without any problems.
