new install of IE7 causes freezing of laptop

  steved99 19:34 17 Apr 2007

My daughters laptop has a virus ("exploit") detected by AVG antivirus software but was unable to heal it. The recommendation was to download latest Microsoft (XP) upgrades first. This included an upgrade to Internet Explorer 7. Now IE7 just hangs whenever she tries to open it and the computer is very slow - even task manager doesn't show all running applications and takes ages to load.

Please can someone help to cure this/

Control Panel > Add or Remove programs > remove Windows Internet Explorer 7. This will have the effect of reverting to IE6. See if that improves things.

If Avg-Anti Virus could not move it you want to try Avg Anti-Spyware,That should get it.

If you decide to reinstall IE7 at a later date,Turn your firewall off first,Then reinstall it.

Got back to IE6 and its now working fine. Just doing another virus scan but probably won't finish tonight. Will update thread tomorrow night. Thanks for the assistance.

Before you upgrade to IE7 next time remove all third party toolbars such as Google and Yahoo. Also there is a known conflict with BT Broadband Help software. Remove this as well and once IE7 is installed download the latest version from the BT site.

Latest virus scan shows no problems and we're back to IE6 which is working fine as well. Thanks to everyone who replied - your help is much appreciated.

Thanks Buteman - think we will stay with IE6 for now. I did tick the resolved box but didn't press the button - sorry about that - updated now.
