  bof:) 12:52 15 Jul 2007

Hi all, I have an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop using XPhome.

Today when turned on by son, he asked why it had no sound, and why there was a 'new hardware detected' icon on the task bar. He wanted to show me a Utube video but when we looked there was no sound.

I rebooted pc but there was no starting up sounds (no beeps either). But new hardware detected icon came back.

DEVICE MANAGER, says the following:

Sound/Audio/game Controller

Audio devices....Realtek AC'97 audio
Midi Devices.....Realtek AC'97 audio
Mixer Devices....Realtek AC'97 audio

In General tab it says device is working properly.

Under ? Other Devices

Multimedia controller...General tab

Device type....other
Location... PC! bus 0, Device 2, function 7

In grey box below, this device is not configured properly, (code 1)

To reinstall click reinstall

In Control Panel/Sounds

Sound & Audio devices, volume bar is set to low and will not move

Speaker settings.... greyed out

Program events...sounds set to none and greyed out

Audio.. default Device...greyed out
Sound recording Default...greyed out
Midi Default ... greyeded out

Audio Codex/Legacy Audio Drivers/Media Control Devices/Video Codecs...

All Devices working properly.

There is no sound speaker icon on the Taskbar.

Just ran AVG nothing detected

Can someone help me get my sound back, please many thanks,

have you check the control panel settings to see if the volume has been muted?

Hi all, ok its stupid admission time... :-(

Yesterday I deleted using add/remove in control panel Real Player. Could this have caused me too loose sound settings/ I dont know.

martan I could not get any of the links you provided to open.

harp1h, volume had not been muted.

Thankyou for all the help.

I have used the search facility on this site to find a posting that gave a link to realteks' website.

I've downloaded the drivers for XP installed and rebooted laptop and sound is fine now.

A happy Mike :-)
