New graphics card causes computer to freeze

I thought I would give my ageing computer a new lease of life by upgrading to a X1600pro 512mb graphics card. Upgraded from nvidia 128mb. I removed all nvidia software (I think), installed the new card and software. It boots up till you try to login with user name and the computer "freezes". I have downloaded the latest drivers to no avail, also uninstalled and re-installed.
Asus A7V600 motherboard, Athlon 3200 processor, 1gb memory.
Anyone have any idea how to solve my problem
Thanks
Alex

Check your PSU, the card needs a 420 Watts or bigger.

The PSU is 400W. According to the spec on the box it's requirements are 300w+

Put your old GPU back, uninstall the drivers and reinstall drivers for that card, and see if you have the same problem.
300 Watt+ could mean anything.

Problem is have you uninstalled the ATI drivers properly?
You've gone from Nvidia to ATI.
Look at this thread and use the driver clean utility. click here
When you need to go to safemode don't use the msconfig command but tap F8 (sometimes F5 on some PCs) to gain safe mode.
Remove all traces of ATI then reboot.
Uinstall Nvidia drivers, reboot and install original drivers from disc usually supplied with PC. See how the PC performs.

Check event viewer, control panel- admin tools- event viewer, look in application and system logs for errors. double click these to get the ID number and source.
Try here; click here for more info on the errors or try google.
