new DVD writer wont write

  kiz 17:59 11 Nov 2005

I have just replaced my CD writer with a LG GSA4167B DVD writer and I cant burn anything.
I can play prerecorded DVDs from it but when I try and burn anything (eg. pics from my hard drive) I get a message, windows is encountering a problem etc and cant copy. I have checked in device manager and the hardware is showing as 'working properly' Should I be updating/adding any drivers etc.? It came as OEM (in a brown box) without software but I believe that windowsXP will recognise it anyway? I also note that from My computer the drive is still showing as a CD drive.
Thanks for any help.

XP needs software like Nero to bun to DVDs. It will burn CDs but not DVDs.

Thanks so much - I should have realised that really!

Or you are using software that is locked to one drive, and as you have replaced it it doesnt rcognise the new one.

I have just written something with nero, and all went OK, so I think that was the problem. I also note that now the drive is showing as DVD-RAM, so all is OK. (I hope) Thanks anyway, Acolyte
