New to DVD

I have just bought my first DVD writer - its the HP DVD REWRITER DRIVE-DVD 300i which supports only the +RW format and is a 4x rewriter. I have 2 question:

1. Is there anything special I need to watch out for when buying Re-writable media. I know there are some fairly cheap ones but some show X2.5 - are they good enough. I would have thought that the proprietary makes i.e Imation were good enough.

2. I hve seen Write o nce media described with a colour: red/white/silver. What is the meaning of this and which is the better quality?

Many thanks
