new drive error message

In an old Pentium (100MHz)PC I have recently swapped the 1.2GB drive for a 4.3GB (hoping to keep all existing information).
The original was running W95, the replacement running W98.
On booting the Configuration Screen showed the 1.2 HD but after changing the BIOS to Auto it showed the correct 4.3.It then gave the message.
"'updating ESCD'
Disc I/O error.
Replace the disc and press any key."
What do I do? Will I have to reformat and reinstall W98?

Thanks alan2273 at least I now know what ESCD means.

I'll keep looking.

Since the new drive has been recognised does it mean it is not a partitioning problem?
Would a reformat and W98 installation help?
Should I remove the battery and clear the BIOS?
