New Computer & Vista

  SURVEY 11:48 05 Feb 2007

I have been asked to help a neighbour buy and set up a new desktop computer. She wants this for basic tasks such as word processing and email (dial-up I believe). I doubt if speed is that important. I felt the safest bet would be a Dell as I have bought several of these over the years.

The Dell that I believe may do the job is:

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3800+
Vista Home Basic
160GB Hard Drive
Integrated nVidia Geoforce 650 LE Graphics
19” Screen
1 Year Collect & Return Warranty
£425.38 including P/P and VAT.

Would Vista run on 512GB RAM or is this asking too much?
There seems to be some dispute as to whether AVG AV will run on Vista?
Will Spybot?
Will Ad-Aware?

Any comments please?

I would stick to 1gb of ram

AVG will work with vista - although some users have had some problems installing. A new-version (for Vista) of Ad-Aware is due at the end of Feb.

Sorry don't know about Spybot.

Spybot works ok with Vista click here don't forget though that Vista comes pre-installed with Windows Defender.

If you are looking for a free alternative to AVG then AVAST works fine on Vista click here

dth - I agree 1GB seems best.

Nellie2 - Thanks, I had forgotten that Defender is included, so something less to install!

AVG is still free.
