If you connect it to replace the old CD-ROM just look at the back of the old drive and set the new as like that and then fix in comp start comp and enter CMOS setup. and run Auto Detect Drives it should then read CD's you will have to load Burning software to write to CD's

You are best keeping your CD or DVD-ROM drive and using it to play audio, data and software CDs.

Keep the rewriter purely for burning and it will extend its lifespan by a considerable margin - at best longevity is not brilliant as manufacturers' usage span figures reveal.

All you need to do is install the rewriter on the secondary IDE cable (as Master), switch the CD or DVD-ROM drive to Slave, enable DMA for both, disable Auto Insert Notification for the CD or DVD-ROM drive (if you are using Nero which controls the drives' operation) and then reboot.

Windows will find your new rewriter hardware and install the basic CD-ROM driver, which is all that is required, and away you go..:-)

In normal system circumstances your rewriter will be Drive E.
