New CD-ROM causes PC to freeze

Can't get to the threads in this existing problem!
Compaq Presario 4506, 200mhz, 48mb memory, Goldstar 16x cd-rom replaced with 56x Mercury cd-rom freezes PC running Win98SE, updated via Windows update!

when does it freeze? when you insert a cd?

Hi Softee. please keep posting here in the forum. other members can see your posting and offer more help. replying here also bumps you up to the top of the queue so you will find a solution faster hopefully.

i think you could do with some more ram maybe (just looked at your specs above)

Correction Bigfoot 16x cd-rom (original Presario drive) when replaced with 56x Mercury drive freezes PC with or without cd inserted. Cd is sometimes read, then freezes pc midway.

Right click My Computer/Propertirs/Device Manager double click CD rom until you see the drive Disable DMA if you see it in one of the boxes then try it

win 98se and your computer should be fine with the new cd drive im guessing. i fitted a x52 burner in my friends win98se computer of similar vintage just last week and it was fine.

is the drive showing in 'my computer'?

Yes it shows in my computer. Will add 16mb to memory in a few days. Will get back.
