A friend who knows less about computers than me said that her existing package, Norton runs out soon and asked if she can start with AVG while her Norton is still running.
She also wamts to know if she needs to get rid of Norton from her computer when it does run out.

100% no, running two resident AV programs at once is a very bad idea. Remove Norton with the removal tool after having downloaded the installer for her chosen replacement.

Download and save AVG,Download and save Norton Removal Tool.Disconnect from internet, use removal tool.
Install AVG.Go online.
No point in having Norton on computer if she doesent want it, you should only use one antivirus or they will conflict.

Any other way could lead to problems.

However I would suggest she switches to Avast, which offers better protection than AVG in their free versions.

I can see that AVG has no fire wall but could she not use the MS one?

  DieSse 17:50 22 Jan 2009

It's not the lack of firewall - there are free good firewalls - and the Windows one can be used too (though it's not great.

It's all the other missing things. Avast doesn't have such a list of missing things.

Do not rely on the windows firewall particulary if its XP
