networking with xp

I have a desktop with xp home and a new laptop with xp pro.
I definately have a network card and it appears to be working ok (device manager says all is well).
However the network setup wizard fails every time it says an error occured during the configuration.
I have the two computers connected via a serial cable.
I also have laplink gold 11 - this has installed ok on the laptop but will not install on the desktop, nor can the laptop connect to the desktop to perform a remote istall. The message i get is a component required to run laplink gold could not be loaded you must rerun setup. I have done this loads of times but to no avail. Can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong. Thank you

Firstly disable any firewalls that are running. Secondly change the cable to a crossover cable.
