Networking Problems Windows 98 & XP Pro

I have a network of XP Pro computers. I have just done a format & clean install of Windows 98 on a older PC. When I connect this PC to the network I can see the other computers in network neighborhood & access them fine. When I use windows update on the 98 PC the first thing it tells me to do is update my IE4 which I do to IE6SP1 without any problems or error messages. After this I cannot see any other computers in Network neighborhood. If I again format & clean istall 98 the other computers are back in network neighborhood. Does anyone know what is wrong or what I can do?

Trimix, is the IE6SP1 just the service pack or does it come with IE6?

Personally I would just install IE 5.5.

recap, it was the full version of IE6. I will try IE5.5
